The purpose of this consultancy is to bring an Nutrition expert to develop National Adolescent Nutrition Guideline for Ethiopia

Key functions, Account abilities, and related duties/tasks

  • Under the supervision of the nutrition specialist (NOC), the consultant will be responsible for drafting, fact-checking, and writing of the National Adolescent Nutrition Guidelines with required annexes and apply the following strategies:
  • Conduct a desk review to understand the landscape of adolescent nutrition in the country.
  • Review newly available evidence and synthesis of findings from the landscape review/analysis and identify priority actions for the adolescent nutrition programing Support the TWG in the development of a standalone adolescent nutrition guide by drafting the guidelines after having the initial draft from the respective technical team established under the nutrition case team FMOH; the content should include intervention strategies and Standard Operational Procedures (SOP’s) for all intervention packages such as IFA/MMS for adolescents , link school and health to provide services and better school environment.
  • Facilitate inputs and review from the Adolescent Nutrition Working Group members throughout the drafting process.
  • Ensure that the guidelines cover relevant programme areas, including monitoring and evaluation.
  • Restructure and rewrite the section of the draft as needed to promote clarity, continuity, and internal consistency and incorporate reviewers’ comments.
  • Fact-check the statements for accuracy and updating of references as/when required.
  • Check and ensure the text responds to the objectives in the national strategies around adolescent nutrition requirements.
  • Provide accuracy and consistency in capitalization, spelling, abbreviations/acronyms, notes, bibliography, titles, graphs, and tables (including their notes and sources), as per the government guide.
  • Ensure that citations are included for statement/passages where required.
  • Ensure that the language used is impactful; that repetitious text and jargon are eliminated; and that potential sensitivities are flagged and ways of resolving the issue(s) proposed.
  • Work closely with responsible TWG in Ministry of health lead by Nutrition case team leader.

The TWG in FMOH will be responsible for the following:

  • Developing and maintaining a schedule to provide timely and complete inputs to the consultant.
  • Being available for review/inputs and closing gaps in data and related information.
  • Reviewing the documents for factual errors and omissions and providing feedback.
  • Key competencies, Technical Background and Experience Required

The successful consultant should offer the following range of skills and experience:

Technical Competencies

  • Good understanding of adolescent nutrition interventions, and experience in designing programmes and community-based nutrition/ health interventions programming in Ethiopia.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and guidelines/manual development writing skills in English. Writing samples may be requested.
  • Good knowledge of the application of the equity lens and human rights perspectives to programming.
  • Good ability to support translation of analytical findings and evidence into a cohesive narrative.
  • Sound negotiation skills and ability to collaborate with different stakeholders
  • Excellent ability to review and analyze data from secondary sources, and;
  • Advanced computer literacy is expected in Word, Excel and Power Point.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Public health Nutrition, public health epidemiology, food and nutritional sciences or related technical field is required. *A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.

A minimum of 10 [Ten] years of relevant professional experience in the nutrition programming in developing countries’ context.

  • Demonstrated experience in producing documents, proposals, and reports for a resource partners, including UN agencies.
  • Experience in implementing nutrition research and programs will be considered an asset
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
